Recognizing the growing need for an experienced, compassionate, and dedicated immigration attorneys in Jacksonville, Florida, Karen opened the Law Office of Karen Winston, LLC. At the Law Office of Karen Winston, we put our clients’ needs first. Karen helps her clients navigate the complicated immigration system every step of the way. With initial strategy sessions and frequent communication throughout the process, Karen helps her clients to try and achieve the best possible outcome for themselves and their families. Karen understands that communication and preparation are critical in successfully navigating complicated immigration cases. Karen is committed to providing a high quality representation in all types of immigration cases including representation before any Immigration Court in the U.S., the Board of Immigration Appeals, Federal Courts, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Karen is licensed by the Supreme Court of Florida, and has been admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Karen received her undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and her Doctor of Jurisprudence from Florida Coastal School of Law. Karen is an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), and currently serves as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations liaison for the Central Florida Chapter of AILA. Karen is a member of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild and also serves on the state and local board for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida.

Melanie Cherrington

Melanie Cherrington is an Associate Attorney at the Law Office of Karen Winston where she focuses on removal/deportation defense. She represents clients before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Immigration Courts. A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Melanie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina. After working in accounting and finance, she returned to school to study law and graduated magna cum laude from Florida Coastal School of Law with a Certificate in International Law. She also gained Pro Bono Honors through her legal volunteer work. To gain more specialized knowledge in the field of international law, she attended the Université d’Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand, France, during the summer of her second year of law school. Her interest in human rights law lead her to work at the Immigration and Human Rights Clinic where she represented clients in naturalization, removal defense, and family-based immigration cases. Melanie is licensed to practice law by the Florida Bar and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

Crisceidi “Cris” is originally from Cuba and immigrated to the U.S. when she was fourteen years old. As a paralegal with the Law Office of Karen Winston, Cris focuses on U-visa applications, self-petitions under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and Naturalization applications. Being an immigrant herself, Cris is able to personally relate to the pain families who are separated endure, and the joy they experience when given the opportunity to stay together. Cris is a positive person who takes pride in making a difference in clients’ lives. When not in the office, Cris is a supermom to three handsome boys.

Elizabeth Santana

Elizabeth (“Lizzy”) is originally from Havana, Cuba, where she studied at Havana University, graduating with a Licentiate in History. Following graduation, Lizzy worked as a researcher, social counselor, and publisher for a NGO. Lizzy later immigrated to Venezuela where she worked as an Executive Secretary and later attended law school, graduating from the Central University of Venezuela with a Licentiate in Law. Lizzy was employed as a lawyer in Venezuela for six years before immigrating again, this time to the U.S. Lizzy brings her rich experience and background to the Law Office of Karen Winston, in her role as our Administrative Assistant. She has an eye for detail and keeps our trains running on time. Lizzy is a lover of life and photography enthusiast.
